How to Find Your Nine Star Ki Birth Star

One fact, three steps

Everything in 九星気学 Kyusei Kigaku — Japanese nine-star astrology — begins with a single fact: the star of your birth year, called your 本命星 Honmei-sei. Finding it takes three small steps and no special tables. A pencil is enough; so is the free calculator on our front page, if you would rather be done in a minute.

Step one — adjust for the old new year

The old calendar turns at 立春 Risshun — the beginning of spring, February 4th — not at midnight on January 1st. So before any arithmetic: if you were born in January, or on February 1st through 3rd, use the year before your birth year. Born January 15th, 1990? For this practice, your year is 1989. Born June 1990? Your year is simply 1990. (Born February 3rd to 5th? You sit on the boundary itself — more on that below.)

Step two — add the digits down to one

Take your adjusted year and add its digits until one digit remains. For 1988: 1 + 9 + 8 + 8 = 26, then 2 + 6 = 8.

Step three — subtract from eleven

Subtract that digit from 11. If the result is 10 or more, subtract 9 once more; if it is 0, call it 9. For our example: 11 − 8 = 3. A person born in March 1988 carries star three — 三碧木星 Sanpeki Mokusei, the Third Jade Tree Star.

The nine answers

Whichever number you reached, it names one of nine stars: 1 一白水星 Ippaku Suisei (water) · 2 二黒土星 Jikoku Dosei (earth) · 3 三碧木星 Sanpeki Mokusei (wood) · 4 四緑木星 Shiroku Mokusei (wood) · 5 五黄土星 Goo Dosei (earth) · 6 六白金星 Roppaku Kinsei (metal) · 7 七赤金星 Shichiseki Kinsei (metal) · 8 八白土星 Happaku Dosei (earth) · 9 九紫火星 Kyushi Kasei (fire). Recent years, for quick checking: 2024 carried star three, 2025 star two, 2026 star one — and 2027 turns the wheel to star nine, the fire star.

If you were born February 3rd–5th

The exact moment of Risshun shifts slightly year to year, so a birth on February 3rd, 4th, or 5th sits on the hinge itself. The arithmetic above may land you a star to either side. The calculator on our front page flags this boundary automatically; if you sit on it, it may be worth reading both neighboring stars and noticing which one you recognize in the mirror.

And then?

Knowing your star is the door, not the room. From here, most people look up their star's temperament, its element, and — around each new year — how their star may meet the year ahead. The 2027 chapters for all nine stars live together in the Kyusei Kigaku 2027 Almanac, if the coming fire year makes you curious.

If arithmetic is not tonight's mood, the free checker finds your star — boundary rule included — in under a minute.
